Multitasking on iOS in its current state is mundane at best, but with iOS 9, Apple is lifting the bar a little higher on the iPad, bringing true multitasking to the fore when the firmware goes live for the general public this fall. The problem with Apple’s feature is that it is exclusive to iPads only, this is where a new jailbreak tweak called Mimir comes in.
Mimir basically brings true Picture-in-Picture (PiP) style multitasking for apps on both iPhone and iPad. Yes, Apple is bringing PiP to iPads in iOS 9, and there has been a tweak namedVideoPane that does PiP too but the problem with both of them is that they are limited to videos only. Mimir works with both apps and videos!
Once installed, simply launch any app of your choice, and then drag down from the top left hand corner of the display – default gesture which can be changed later in Settings – and you’ll get a Picture-in-Picture style view of the running app.
Once your app is in a PiP state, you can drag it around on the display by holding the status bar. You even have the option to resize the app window if you so wish using pinch to zoom gestures and send the app in maximize or minimize mode if you like. Want to view the PiP app in landscape mode? No problem, with a simple tap of a button, you can do just that.
With the app of your choice floating up front in PiP mode, you can do whatever you like in the background. Such as scroll through your pages of apps on home screen, or launch a new app and so on. Both, the app in the background and PiP app in the foreground, are active which means you can interact with both at the same time.
But wait, there’s more!
You can also have multiple apps in PiP mode, all active at the same time. Pretty awesome! This is what sets Mimir apart from other tweaks like Multify.
Mimir is available to download right now from the BigBoss repo in Cydia and costs $3.99. That price might seem a bit too steep for some, but judging by the power it grants users when it comes to multitasking, it seems fairly justified.
