Samsung Gear VR arrives for Galaxy S6 and S6 edge

Samsung has announced its Gear VR, built in conjunction with Facebook-owner VR specialists Oculus, is coming in a new ‘Innovators Edition’ for the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge.
The device, which allows users to immerse themselves in 3D environments using a smartphone display, will be available in Australia from June 18 with a RRP of $299.
Presales have started today via Samsung’s eStore and Samsung’s physical experience stores.
The Gear VR was previously only compatible with the Galaxy Note 4 smartphone and Samsung said the new Innovators Edition has a 15 per cent reduction in size from that model.
“The Samsung Gear VR platform has attracted strong interest from Australia’s content developer community with local production houses already showcasing the possibilities of what virtual reality technology can offer audiences,” said Prasad Gokhale, vice president - IT & Mobile - Samsung Electronics Australia.
"We’re very excited to be a part of this monumental change in how studios develop and produce content for Australians."
The company also announced a new set of headphones, Samsung Level On wireless headphones, which boast six built-in microphones and active noise cancelling.
They’re available now from Samsung’s eStore with a RRP of $299.
Reviewer Nathan Olivarez-Giles wrote for Technology Spectator that the first iteration of the Samsung Gear VR was a "shallow dip into the virtual pool".
"Hopefully, the amount of stuff you can do with a VR headset will change over time, but there are no guarantees," he said. "As wowing as Gear VR is, I wouldn't recommend you ditch your current phone for a Note 4 and this headset."
