Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) plans to launch its latest mobile OS, Android M, at Google I/O in San Francisco next week. The OS update isn’t thought to be very important in the grand scheme of mobile growth, but that doesn’t mean shareholders should ignore it. Android M may be the most important Google push into enterprise since Google Docs. As Google Inc. shares stagnate that’s worth some thought.
Google names its Android versions after deserts by tradition. That will change in 2015. In a leak from the firm’s I/O program for Android at Work, promotional materials confirmed that the new system will be named Android M. That’s a business-like omen from the Mountain View search giant.
Android M gets Google into business
Google has been turned around on many fronts with Android in the last twelve months. The release of the iPhone 6 by Apple, and the huge number of users that jumped ship, showed the fragile nature of the system. With Android M Mssrs. Page and Brin are looking to get ahead in some sphere. The new Android OS is all about the office.

Android at Work is a Google app that offers standard business features on older phones. That system will see some focus at the event, but the office chops of the Android M update shouldn’t be ignored.
Most of the improvements will not be noticed by users, they’ll be on the back end. IT folks will be sure to see the potential right away. It may take the rest of us some time to catch up to the grand plan behind Android M.
Business loves to save money, and buying employees low cost Android phones is a lot thriftier than grabbing an iPhone for all in the workplace. The basics of what Google will need to offer to enterprise with Android M is clear.
The OS will need to include enhanced security features, more options for control from IT guys, employee tracking, and beefed up security.
Sanjay Khanna, Senior Analyst, at IDC Canada says that “It’s no slam dunk for Android for Work to deliver.” His ideas on the legacy platform extend to the enterprise features of Android M as well.
“It’s absolutely essential that CIOs and IT organizations pay attention and find out how credible the proposition is in terms of simplification and in terms of how the ecosystem comes together around security” according to the guru.
Android goes to work for Google
Sundar Pichai, VP in charge of products, will deliver the keynote at Google I/O next week and will show off Android M for the first time. The OS will, if rumors are believed, have some nice features added. Those include an Android Pay platform, fingerprint scanning, as well as voice tools to many apps.
The system will also bring more intelligent notification to the Android platform and improve on Google Cloud Messenger. Google has seen how easy it is for its fans to switch to Apple devices. The firm needs some way to make phones running its services more “sticky.”
Putting them into the office may be the best way forward. Google is almost certain to focus on those Android M features next week, and IT departments will sit up and take notice.
