Can you handle yet more information pertaining to Apple’s upcoming iPhone 6s? A new set of photo and video renders have provided us with the best look yet of Apple’s next-generation iPhone. The renders also manage to provide us with some additional information that hasn’t been previously discussed in any great detail and raises the excitement levels for Apple’s new smartphone ahead of a potential release this coming September.
Rather than showing actual internal components or shells of the upcoming iPhone 6s these particular renders are computer-aided-design (CAD) files that were crafted to distribute to third-party accessory manufacturers. The official CAD representations of the device are intended to provide manufacturers of iPhone cases and similar products with an early look at the dimensions and aesthetics of the phone, so that they can have their products ready to flood the market upon immediate release of the device.
The renders themselves don’t provide any immediate surprises, but they do add a little more substance to the speculation that the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will be slightly thicker than the current-generation models that were introduced last October. You may remember that the current model iPhones, and in particular the larger 6 Plus, were subject to the “Bendgate” scandal, and came in for quite a lot of criticism about the lack of robustness and the relative ease with which consumers could bend the phone under certain conditions. It’s believed that the slightly thicker, more robust design is intended to provide additional structural support to prevent this from occurring again.
With that said, we aren’t talking about huge changes here. The current iPhone 6 model measures in at 6.9mm thick, whereas the iPhone 6s shows on the CAD files as being 7.1mm thick. The iPhone 6s Plus also jumps up 0.2mm from 7.1mm to 7.3mm. What’s interesting about the change in thickness is that it could potentially allow Apple to ditch the protruding camera module on the rear of the iPhone 6s. It’s possible that the sourced schematics are not actually quite complete, hence this missing bulbous camera on the 6s version, but it is also entirely possible that one model will ship with the current camera setup while the smaller 6s model does away with it.
Here’s a video render of the supposed iPhone 6s:
