Facebook hackathon gives Super Mario millennial touch

Written by
MENLO PARK, United States (AFP) - Amanda Maler wasn't even born yet when Nintendo's beloved Super Mario made his debut 30 years ago.
But, the playfully heroic video game character became fodder for fierce rivalry between Maler and her brother as children and she pounced on a chance to create a Facebook-infused level during a two-day hackathon at the social network's headquarters in the Silicon Valley city of Menlo Park.
Maler and fellow 20-somethings named their team Move Fast And Brick Things in a merging of a Facebook hacker-mindset motto "move fast and break things", with a reference to brick blocks that are well-known obstacles in Mario games.
"We are millennials and we grew up playing Mario," 23-year-old Facebook employee Maler said at the hackathon on Wednesday.
"We thought, 'Let's bring Facebook to Nintendo. Be bold.'" More than 100 Facebook employees took part in a hackathon that sprang out of an invitation by Nintendo to create a level for a new Super Mario Maker game set for release on September 11.
The event sprang from a partnership in which the Japanese video game veteran gave Facebook early access to the game so the social network could create its own level of play.
Nintendo will mark the 30th anniversary of its iconic "Super Mario" franchise this year with the new game, which will let people create and share levels for play.
- 'Diabolical' minds -
"Facebook has attracted some of the brightest minds in the tech industry who can come up with some of the most diabolical puzzles and who also like to push boundaries about what is possible," AJ Glasser, manager of the social network's games partnerships team, told AFP at the event.
"Pushing everything to the maximum fits well with what Mario Maker is trying to accomplish, which is re-imagining a game that is 30 years old." Game levels created by competing teams featured tricky challenges, daring leaps, daunting adversaries, and, of course, cleverly incorporated Facebook or Instagram logos along with "thumbs up" icons.
Players have to be able to beat levels they create because "you can't just make people crazy", Krysta Yang of Nintendo of America told AFP at the hackathon.
"A game that lets you showcase your creativity is a perfect fit with the culture at Facebook," Yang said.
Some teams drew diagrams on graph paper, others worked on white boards, and there were those who opted to use sticky notes they frequently re-arranged.
The winning level will be available at Nintendo's online Miiverse social network for Wii U consoles.
Super Mario Maker will let any player create and share game levels.
- Mario for millennials -
"Mario kind of went away a little bit, and to bring it back to the next generation is pretty awesome," Maler said.
"For most of us, it is like being a little kid again," chimed 24-year-old teammate Lola Alli.
"Being able to make something you enjoyed where you were a kid is super exciting." Yang noted that making the winning Facebook level also promises bragging rights among tech-savvy Mario lovers at the social network.
"I certainly plan to Facebook about it; post a few Instagram pictures," Glasser said.
Nintendo played to Super Mario fans during a premier Electronic Entertainment Expo video game gathering that took place in Los Angeles in June.
"If there is a secret to the longevity of Nintendo franchises, it is transformation," Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said during an E3 presentation.
Xbox and PlayStation consoles from Microsoft and Sony, respectively, are known for immersive, action-packed games nearing film quality while Nintendo has built a devoted following for closely-protected franchises such as Mario and Legend of Zelda.

Fans of the Moto Racer series may be happy to read that it is to make a return to console gaming in the form of Moto Racer 4. We may even catch a glimpse of it at Gamescom 2015.
In development by Artefact Studio, Moto Racer 4 will be powered by the Unreal Engine 4. Offering a “unique graphical style” the press release for the announcement promises that the game will remain true to the spirit of Moto Racing, which won the series so many fans around the world.
Elliot Grassiano, Microïds Unit VP explains:
“Moto Racer 4 fits in perfectly with Microïds’ new strategy, which is to concentrate on ambitious video game projects with an international scope, such as Syberia 3 and Agatha Christie: The ABC Murders. This latest offering wil put the spotlight back on a legendary video game franchise that has been very popular among gamers”.
This will be the first time that the Moto Racer series, originally created in 1997 by Paul Cuisset (creator of Flashback) makes its way to the current generation consoles. Featuring “ultra-fast races in high-powered cars or spectacular Motocross races”, the series has sold seven million units around the world. Will its return be as popular as Microïds hope it will be?
Moto Racer 4 is expected to have a 2016 release and will be coming to Playstation 4 and Xbox One. With such a long wait till release, this may mean we won’t see much more than a technical demo at Gamescom, if even that.
Are you looking forward to the release of Moto Racer 4? Let us know your thoughts below.

Yahoo launches Livetext, a slient video app

Written by

NEW YORK: Yahoo has unveiled a new mobile application allowing users to exchange live video, text and emoticons, without audio.

"We wanted to find that new and expressive way of communicating," Yahoo senior vice president Adam Cahan said at a New York media event for the app called Livetext.

Cahan said the Yahoo team chose to focus on video without audio to encourage people to use the app in a variety of situations.

"We wanted to make sure there is no inhibition of answering or connecting," he said.

With audio, he said, Yahoo found that in many situations, people "are not willing to engage."

At the event, product manager Arjun Sethi demonstrated "conversations" over smartphone connections that showed live facial expressions accompanied by text and emoticons.

"We see video as a way to make your conversations more authentic, and we see text as a way to connect that's quick and non-intrusive," Sethi said.

The application is being made available for Apple and Android devices starting on Thursday in the United States, Britain, Canada, Germany and France.

It has already been tested and is available in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Ireland.

The move comes with Yahoo aiming to refocus its business on mobile and video after losing leadership in web search.

The tech industry already has a number of messaging apps ranging from Facebook-owned WhatsApp to Snapchat, which features disappearing video messages.

"Every platform shift leads to new forms of communication, driven by our desire to connect and interact in richer ways," Cahan said in a statement

"We wanted to create a new way to communicate, blending the simplicity of texting with the emotion and immediacy of live video, to make your experience spontaneous and real."

Sethi came to Yahoo from the mobile messaging application MessageMe, acquired by Yahoo last year.

Windows 10: The 5 best new features

Windows 10 Features

Windows. 10. Is. Here.
For a while there, it felt as though this day might never come. The world, trapped for an eternity in the nightmare that was Windows 8. But just as Microsoft was the cause of all that ailed us in Windows 8, so too will it be the cure. With Windows 10, Microsoft formally admits that its awful vision of a single interface for tablets and desktop computers alike was just that: Awful.
There is no question that the single most important reason to upgrade your computer to Windows 10 from Windows 8 is to bury the previous-generation operating system forever and never look back. That’s not the only reason, though.
Windows 10’s best feature might simply be that it’s not Windows 8, but in this article we’ll discuss five more fantastic features of Windows 10 that will make you want to upgrade right away.

Start Menu

windows-10-1
Ask (1,497,832 times), and it shall be given you.
Users hated — and I mean, absolutely HATED — Microsoft’s decision to kill the Start Menu in Windows 8. After well over a decade of relying on that little Start button to give us access to a wide range of software and settings, it had now vanished into thin air.
Microsoft brought the Start button back in Windows 8.1, but it did so in the most heartless imaginable way: Clicking it would take users directly to the tile-based Start screen they loathed so much.
In Windows 10, that entire Start screen has been shrunken down and merged with traditional Start elements to create an all new Start Menu when the OS is used in desktop mode. It’s instantly recognizable, and you’ll love having it back.

Edge Browser

microsoft-edge-browser
OK seriously, Internet Explorer is terrible. You know it, I know it, and Microsoft finally knows it.
Windows 10 marks the start of a transition away from Internet Explorer toward a brand new browser called Microsoft Edge. It’s faster, it’s sleeker, and most importantly, it’s not Internet Explorer.
Many companies are still reliant on IE, so Microsoft isn’t going to anger them by just tossing its old browser to the curb. Eventually, however, it will go the way of the dinosaur and leave Edge in its wake.

Cortana

cortana-desktop
Apple’s introduction of Siri caused all of its major rivals to create their own copycat products, and Cortana emerged among them. Every company copies every other company in consumer tech though, and Cortana is actually quite useful.
Of course, confining Cortana to the Windows Phone platform meant that about 19 people on the planet got to enjoy it. Now, billions will eventually have access to Microsoft’s voice-controlled virtual assistant.

Continuum Mode

Continuum-Mode
Microsoft still insists that one operating system is the way to go for desktop computers and tablets alike, but in Windows 10, it actually decided to optimize the interface depending on which type of machine you’re on. And best of all, the company made it wonderfully simple to switch between the two different interfaces on hybrid devices like the Microsoft Surface line of tablets.
Here’s a great quick video that shows how Continuum Mode works:

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Ballmer Thumbs Up
Last, but most certainly not least, Windows 10 is completely free for users running Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1, as long as they’re not enterprise users. This is Microsoft’s way of saying, “we’re sorry Windows 8 was such an unrelenting travesty,” and it’s certainly appreciated.

5 awful Windows 8 problems that are fixed in Windows 10

Written by
Windows 10 Features

Windows 10 hasn’t even been out for a day yet, but it already seems like the sour taste left in our mouths by Windows 8 is fading. It’ll be a while before it’s completely gone, but there is absolutely no question that Windows 10 is a huge step in the right direction.
There are a number of great new features in Windows 10, and we covered five of the best ones in a recent article. Now, it’s time to take a look at five of the most awful, annoying, horrible problems from Windows 8 and see how Microsoft fixed them in its new operating system.

Start Screen

Windows-8-start-screen
It’s hard to state this definitively, but it might be safe to say that everyone hates the Windows 8 Start screen. Every single person. I even have friends who work at Microsoft and hate the Start screen. On a desktop or laptop, it’s just… horrendous.
In Windows 10, Microsoft has finally brought back the desktop Start menu, and it’s glorious. It includes most of the key elements from Windows 7’s Start menu, and then adds a section for modern tiles. In this format, the Windows tiles are no longer offensive — they’re actually useful.
Here’s what it looks like now:
windows-10-1

What about tablets?

Continuum-Mode
The second major Windows 8 pain point that Windows 10 fixes is the concept ofone size fits all.
Having a single operating system that spans desktops, laptops, tablets and smartphones sounds like a great idea. Having a single user interface that spans desktops, laptops, tablets and smartphones sounds like a terrible idea. Microsoft did it anyway with Windows 8, but fixed the problem in Windows 10.
Now, we have Continuum Mode, which alters Windows 10’s user interface based on whether you’re on a tablet or a PC. And if you have a hybrid device, you can even switch back and forth depending on whether you’re in laptop mode or tablet mode.

Windows, in Windows

windows-10-programs
The Windows platform is named “Windows” because of the key feature that set it apart from older operating systems when it first debuted: Windows.
Windows apps open in windows. You can drag them around, drag a corner to resize them, and arrange them however you’d like. In Windows 8, modern apps took up the entire screen and you had to jump through hoops to make them the size you want.
Thankfully, Windows 10 dials down the crazy and lets you work in… windows.

Living on the Edge

microsoft-edge-browser
So long, Internet Explorer — no one will miss you. And Windows 8 was so terrible that it included not one but TWO versions of Internet Explorer!
OK, so maybe there are some people who would miss Internet Explorer, so Microsoft kept it around. It’s mainly for enterprise users though, and we highly recommend switching to Windows 10’s faster and sleeker new Edge browser.

Notification, er, Action Center

win10_windows_actioncenter-2000x1125
Windows 8’s live tiles were cool in theory, but looking around for information pertaining to notifications was a huge pain. In Windows 10, Microsoft introduced the Action Center, which is its slight reimagining of Apple’s Notification Center from OS X.
Here, you’ll find all of your notifications in one place so you can act on them quickly and easily. This section is also customizable, just like Notification Center, so you can create the perfect notification hub for your needs.

BREAKING NEWS TALIBAN LEADER MULLAH OMAR IS DEAD

Written by
Mullah Omar
The leader of the Afghan Taliban, Mullah Mohammed Omar, has died, Afghan officials say, but the militant group has not commented on the claim.
The reclusive leader died two to three years ago, Afghan government and intelligence sources said. No further details were released.
A Taliban spokesman contacted by the BBC said the group would issue a statement shortly.
There have been several reports of Mullah Omar's death in the past.
However, this is the first to be confirmed by top sources in the Afghan government.
Mullah Omar led the Taliban to victory over rival Afghan militias in the civil war that followed the withdrawal of Soviet troops.
Taliban fighters on parade in Kabul
His alliance with al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden prompted the US-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks on New York and Washington.
Mullah Omar has since been in hiding, with a $10m US state department bounty on his head.
Over the years, the Taliban have released several messages purported to be from the fugitive leader.
The latest of these statements, from mid-July, expressed support for peace talks between the Taliban and the Afghan government.
However, the message was in the form of a text published on a Taliban website, rather than an audio or video recording - fuelling rumours that the leader was dead or incapacitated.
